How to Replace a Light Fixture With a Ceiling Fan

There are quite a few options to choose from, but the most common has been to replace their linear fluorescent lighting with Type B LED T8 tubes. Type B LED tubes operate directly on the line voltage, bypassing the fluorescent ballast. Often times fluorescent fixtures have emergency lighting capability with an emergency battery backup ballast that turns on a portion of the lighting during a power failure. That can be a major issue if it is overlooked as you need to have emergency lighting by code. So if you decide on type B LED tubes and you run across an emergency fluorescent fixture, how do you proceed with the project? Option 1 — GOOD — Leave the emergency fixtures fluorescent The first option is to leave the emergency fixtures fluorescent while continuing to convert the non-emergency fixtures to LED.

12VDC and 24VDC Input Electronic ballasts for fluorescent lamps 24VAC input electronic ballast for fluorescent lights These high efficiency ballasts are for 20 and 40 watt fluorescent light fixtures in cars, RVs, boats, and solar systems.

They are specially designed for true reef tanks with corals demanding optimum light distribution. Aqua Vim MH reef light systems help achieve higher wattage per gallon and fuller oceanic light spectrums than any other lights on the market and are ideal for luxurious high tanks like Aqua Vim’s Ocean View and Moon View aquariums. Magnetic ballasts in our metal halide system design are purposely utilized to start-up slowly to prevent aquatic pets from light shock, and to extend the lives of your bulbs.

Both MH and T5 ballasts are all housed in a well-designed remote “heat sink” box that you can place in either horizontal or vertical position to save space in your cabinet. Separately extruded housings divide T5 bulbs from the metal halide bulbs to keep excessive heat from effecting lives of bulbs. Each system includes both metal halide and T5 HO bulbs, suspension kit and supporting legs.

Our engineers have successfully extended the technology further by using a series of proprietarily acquired techniques and materials to benefit aquarists specifically. Other LED fixtures, usually with more than one projecting, small half-sphere-shape bulbs in a fixture, produce pointy light columns this makes light spread uneven , double or overlapping shadows this makes very un-natural , and dizzying effect this is not fun as you spend long time watching.

By comparison, the light emitting units of our LED fixture appears virtually flat on mounting board.

Fluorescent tubes require a ballast to operate. A fluorescent tube circuit includes a ballast, wires, lampholders, and the tubes. Bulb vs Lamp Electricians usually refer to a light bulb as a lamp. On this page, we will refer to a fluorescent light bulb as a lamp or tube. Individual vs Common Ballast Wires Individual ballast wires each connect to a lampholder on one side of each tube.

Can you use V single phase power to power V fluorescent light fixtures? Transformers of this kind can be the auto type or isolation type and are available at a much higher cost that it would be to just buy volt ballasts and sell the ones at your next yard sale. If they do start, they won’t work well and the lamps will have reduced life. MORE Does a dimmer switch rheostat consume the electricity that the light fixture is not receiving?

First off, most modern dimmer switches aren’t rheostats. For both of these, their modeof action is to change the duty cycle of the AC wave duty cycle istime on versus cycle time suc…h that less power per cycle is putthrough the bulb. This is more efficient than a rheostat, in that, there isnt as much resistive loss across the dimmer. The resistive loss is where the “a little” comes in.

Project overview Installing a new light fixture is a great way to instantly change a drab room into a dazzling one. Lighting showrooms and catalogs have a wide variety of fixtures to tempt you. And even though the bag of parts included with some fixtures may look daunting, the electrical connections are simple enough for even a beginner. But poor installation techniques can result in a potentially lethal shock or fire.

Professional Resources Linear Fluorescent Fluorescent lighting uses much less power than incandescent lighting. When dimmed, fluorescent lighting continues to be a more energy efficient light source. Types of Ballasts Multi-input digital control Multi-input digital control is a wired communication technology that facilitates individual ballast addressing, connection of multiple control devices, and control of ballasts individually or in groups.

The digital wires are polarity insensitive and may be wired in any topology. Digital communication wires may be run with the mains voltage class 1 or isolated from mains class 2. Multi-input digital control allows for the quick connection and reconfiguration of devices.

The hot must be connected to the wire of the light fixture that connects to the ‘button’ at the back of the receptacle that the light bulb screws into, NOT the threaded metal socket ring. Contrary to CaptSmethwick’s post, polarity does not matter to any light bulb, not incandescent, nor LCD, and I can’t fathom how it would even to the new LED bulbs AC current is bi-directional, so a device cannot tell what wire is hot, and what is not.

Polarity does matter for when you screw a light bulb in or out, because if the threaded ring of the fixture is energized, the risk of an electircal shock that will zap your arm and possibly cause you to fall off your stool and break your leg when changing it is greatly increased! The problem is the fact that the safety system built into these devices in terms of how they are constructed and energized is compromised. Instead of your toaster’s ‘live’ wire going directly to the switch first where the energy stops if the switch is off , when the polarity is reversed, the ‘live’ becomes the neutral line, energizing the housing and chassis, then the burner element, and then arriving at the switch regardless of whether on or off, live energy has still come this far.

Author: Terry Peterman Replacing a light fixture is a common DIY project, and generally doesn’t cause too much “head scratching”. However, there are times when you think you’ve followed the right steps, made all the appropriate connections and yet the light fixture doesn’t work – you’ve got a light fixture .

A fluorescent fixture has three main parts — the bulb, ballast, and starter. When one of these components malfunctions, replacement is usually the answer. You might consider replacing some of your old incandescent fixtures with fluorescent lamps. Fluorescent light provides even and shadow-free illumination, but, best of all, fluorescent bulbs are more efficient than incandescent bulbs.

In an incandescent bulb, much of the electric power is discharged as heat instead of light. The fluorescent bulb, in contrast, remains cool. How does a fluorescent lamp work? In a fluorescent circuit, beginning at the left-hand prong of the plug, current goes through the ballast, through one of the lamp filaments, through the closed switch in the starter, through the other filament in the lamp, and out the right-hand prong of the plug.

How to Install a Light Fixture With Two Lead Wires Often, homeowners purchase a new interior or exterior light fixture, then pay a handyman or electrician to hook it up because the wires are different colors. Most light fixtures have two electrical wires with colored insulation and a copper ground wire. An enthusiastic homeowner can save the cost of a professional by knowing which wires connect to which. With this knowledge, you or a family member can do the wiring connections for one or more lights.

If the breakers aren’t labeled, ask a family member to turn on the light with the switch as you cycle through the breakers until it goes off. You’ll see white wires at one side of the switch and black wires attached at the other side. One of the black and white wires goes to the light fixture. The other black and white wires are the electrical circuit for the switch.

If the light can be turned on or off from switches at each side of the room, you’ll see a blue wire that connects the electrical circuits for three-way switches. In some cases, it may run through the electrical box where the existing light is installed, but it is only a switch wire and not a wire for the light. These connect to the corresponding black and white electrical wires that run from the switch to the electrical box where the existing fixture is installed.

In addition, there is a bare copper ground wire that connects to a green grounding screw inside the electrical box. While the light only has a black and white electrical wire, some manufacturer’s include an addition wire nut because these are easy to misplace when installing a light.

Some hang from buildings, while others are placed on or just above the ground. Paper lanterns occur in societies around the world. Modern varieties often place an electric light in a decorative glass case.

Cut out of your fluorescent lights flickers or direct wire nuts, one i’ve hooked up your florescent light ballasts have blue wires. Connect the ballast system is similar to a compatible. Remove the ceiling and dispose of each wire connectors.

Watch video of this step. If you have access from above, you can make and install your own support brace using a length of 2×4 lumber nailed to the ceiling joists on both sides of the box location Image 2. Position the brace directly above the ceiling box. From below, use wood screws to attach the ceiling box securely to the brace. If you do not have access to work above the ceiling, you can install an expanding metal brace from below to support the ceiling box and fan.

First, remove the existing box, then insert the brace up through the hole and secure it in position by ratcheting the mechanism into place. As the ratchet is turned from below, arms on the brace extend until they contact the ceiling joists on both sides of the hole Image 3 demonstration. The spikes on the arms anchor securely into the wood. Some braces are available with a ceiling box attached, or you can attach the existing ceiling box to the brace.

This method also may be used to mount a fan on a ceiling where no electrical fixture was previously installed. After a hole is cut in the ceiling, electrical wiring is routed to the hole from a convenient nearby junction box, then the brace and a new ceiling box are installed as described above.
