Samuel Colt developed the first mass-produced, multi-shot, revolving firearms. Various revolving designs had been around for centuries, but precision parts couldn’t be made with available technologies. Colt was the first to apply Industrial Age machining tools to the idea. Mass production made the guns affordable. Reliability and accuracy made the Colt a favorite of soldiers and frontiersmen. The Colt depicted is a Third Model Dragoon percussion revolver ca. A Colt with such lavish decoration and gold inlay is extremely rare.

Does the Constitution or the Predilection of Judges Reign? Nevertheless, judges have an obligation to interpret the Constitution, irrespective of their personal feelings, so as to carry out the intent of the Framers. If judges abandon this obligation, the public will view courts as political institutions, their decisions less rooted in the law than in the personalities and politics of the individual judges, and will view the courts as not expounding the law but rather as handing down social policy in judicial dress to suit the perceived needs of the moment.
Even constitutional rights that we have come to regard as indispensable involve this tension between individual freedom and state control.

Hancock beamed as Alicia reached her side, put an arm around Alicia, and brought her into their circle. His piercing blue eyes threatened the strength in her knees. Though taller than most ladies, Alicia still had to look up to meet his gaze. No other color existed in those eyes; no green or gray, only deep, dark blue, like the fathomless depths of the ocean. All the other men she had met lately, namely those her uncle insisted she consider for a husband, had taken careful note of her figure.
But this gentleman only looked into her eyes. Lord Amesbury inclined his head. Alicia met his frank gaze and a sensation she did not quite understand stirred within her until breathing became a conscious effort. Unable to pull her eyes away, Alicia sank into a curtsey. Sensuality radiated off him, not in a manner that left her feeling threatened, but in a way that left her breathless for more. More of what, she did not know.
But she wanted to find out. She looked back at Elizabeth who smiled encouragingly.

Mar 16, · I picked up an old flintlock that I can’t seem to identify. I know a guy who is “in to” the old flintlocks (used to make them in Williamsburg, VA) and knows it was made in the ‘s for military use (and it has been used) and isn’t English, French or German. Anyone have a resource that can help me identify it? It’s got lot’s of ID marks but I get no hits on the internet.

All these test have slightly diversified numbers because of different guns, men, targets but you get the idea. But again, that numbers show us only the full potential of early firearms. Lets see how good did they fare in battles. Muskets and arquebuses in real battles. Krenn, Kalaus and Hall, ibid. No one can deny that early modern firearms sometimes allowed feats of marksmanship.

The Harpers Ferry arsenal built about four thousand which were highly prized by the officers lucky enough to be issued them. With a classic design dating back to the buccaneers and an abundance of brass furnishings, this handsome flintlock sidearm was nevertheless modern for its time, and sported a very accurate ten inch rifled barrel. Firing a grain round ball, and later a grain mini developed for the Civil War era rifles, its power approximates that of the 45 auto of today.

The flintlock mechanism, like the pendulum clock mechanism , is amazing from an innovation standpoint. This single device solved so many of the problems of the time, and it did so using the fairly primitive tools and technology already available then. The flintlock was quite an accomplishment! The basic goal of the flintlock is simple: To create this spark, the flintlock uses the “flint and steel” approach. The idea behind flint and steel is straightforward.
Flint is an amazingly hard form of rock. If you strike iron or steel with flint, the flint flakes off tiny particles of iron. The force of the blow and the friction it creates actually ignites the iron, and it burns rapidly to form Fe3O4. The sparks that you see are the hot specks of iron burning! If these sparks come near gunpowder, they will ignite it.

Monday, April 30, An Early French Pistol By Brian Godwin In , the late Torsten Lenk, later Director of the Tojhusmuset in Copenhagen, published his monumental study on the flintlock and established a foundation by which most early flintlocks have since been identified and dated. Some dates applied by Lenk to the very earliest flintlocks have since been challenged and amended by later students but the study still remains of great importance and has been used in these notes to date the early pistol that is the subject of this article.
